Melva Lucille George Anderson Halliday
December 9th 1909-August 26th 2014
She passed away quietly well looked after at
Kiwannis Care Centre in New Westminster this afternoon. Recently she refused to eat or get out of bed or take her meds. She's survived by her son Harry Anderson, his wife Doreen living on Vancouver Island plus his four adult children (Corey, Shelley, Diana and Joey. She outlived her two sons Ken and Bob who gave her her grand children Debbie Anderson Cains (Jeffrey Anderson), Walter Anderson and Betty-Ann Anderson ( Paisley, Ella-Jean, Avalina, Anastasia, Marvin Manghi) and Patrick Manghi. Bob's son Ben and daughter? Born in Lynn Valley, North Vancouver, Grandma David as she was known to me moved to New Westminster in 1924 at the age of 15 and raised her sons in Queensborough later moving to Sapperton. She loved her garden especially her Kiwi vines, where she grew flowers, vegetables and fruits. Her garden was her passion and she loved her little house on Braid Street where she lived until she was almost 100 years old! She lived on Braid Street in a small 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom house built in 1940. The house had a crawl space/basement with a dirt floor where she kept and used her old wringer washer. The home was about 500 square feet with a single garage slash workshop too.

Avalina was a busy bee today! we have been working on playing with new toys and friends, a challenge she's taken head on :) Today I saw her at two new centers! (potato heads & patterns) the photo attached is of a nice pattern she was working on :) Tell her to keep up the great work!

May All Day Scrapbooking Event
Need a little break for yourself? Come out for the entire day to craft with us! The hall opens at 8am and closes at midnight. Come as early as you want, stay as late as you want! No need to cook or clean! We will provide some breakfast muffins and hot drinks. Lunch will be sandwiches and salad, and a spaghetti dinner with dessert! Price is $45.

Local workshops in Langley, BC
I am really pleased to share that I have two workshops coming up at Clipper Street, one of my local scrapbook shops. I was happy to get the invitation from the shop owners and can't wait to visit with and meet some local paper craters during the workshops.
The store is running a discounted registration for the workshops until tomorrow night, Jan. 23. So if you were on the fence about registering, I'd urge you to sign up before the fee goes up to regular price.

Simply Sweet Vintage Greetings - Feb.16, 11AM-2PM.
Description: Join Carolyn for this 3 Hour Workshop where you will create 4 greeting cards featuring the Melissa Frances Pearl Collection of rubber stamps and learn the secrets to Carolyn's favourite linear style of cardmaking. Class Kit includes products from October Afternoon,American Crafts,Bazzill and Carolyn's favourite,Melissa Frances. Your Class Kit is very generous and you will have lots of fun getting creative with your "leftovers"! Copics are used in Class but it is not a requirement to have your own.

can fat girls fence?
I have been thinking of starting fencing with my son or one of my daughters for a while but I'm scared.
What if I am terrible? Well, that's a given since I have never done it before. I would like to learn.
What if I make a fool of myself? They'll be strangers right?
Can we fit something additional into our schedule? It's all about balance right?
Is it expensive? Is a lot of gear required? There is the uniform AND the equipment.
Can I get hurt? Will I inadvertently hurt others? Hence a uniform and good equipment.
I'm still on the FENCE so to speak.
I will keep you posted...

The age-old sport of swordplay is ideal for girls who prefer not to play team sports, but still want to stay active and competitive. If you expressed an interest in fencing as a sport, you should know that the uniforms are not gender specific, save for one component mandatory for female players. The plain nature of the uniforms gives each participant an equal starting point in fencing.

Jacket and Knickers
The two largest parts of the fencing uniform consist of a jacket and knickers. Fencing jackets usually zip up the back, are fastened under the crotch and have plan fronts and high necks. Long sleeves are a must in order to protect the body from injury. The pants are known as knickers and stretch from the waist down to the bottom of the knee. Fencing gear is traditionally white, and extra adornment in the shape of stickers or embellishment is typically red
Breast and Underarm Protector
Female players are required to wear a breast protector as part of the fencing uniform. A breast protector is thin plastic piece worn under the jacket that hangs over the shoulders and across the chest to protect from injury around the breast area. It offers hardened, molded cups that provide protection much like a men's jock strap does. Underarm protectors are half sleeve shirts worn under the jacket that protect your dominant underarm from thrusts.
Mask
The final piece of equipment that a girl must wear as part of the fencing outfit is the mask. The mask is imperative for safety reasons. While fencing is not an especially aggressive or dangerous sport, a wayward foil or epee could cause damage, especially to the eyes. The mask covers the entire face in mesh while still allowing complete visibility. While some masks have bibs that snap on to protect the neck, the bib must be sewn on in fencing competition.
